Associate Director, Translational Medicine

Astellas is announcing an Associate Director, Translational Medicine opportunity at their new affiliate Xyphos in South San Francisco, CA.



The primary responsibility of the Associate Director, Translational Medicine  is to provide oversight to all pre-clinical development efforts, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the functional interdependencies and critical path activities.


Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Interfaces with oncology contract research organization (CROs) to design, troubleshoot, implement, and interpret animal model studies
  • Supports the implementation of pre-clinical models with a solid foundation of pharmacology and toxicology
  • Identifies and designs the appropriate small animal models for in vivo demonstration of preclinical efficacy and safety
  • Ensures collection of appropriate samples from preclinical models, their analysis, and interpretation of the data
  • Processes and condenses data for efficient, organized, and thoughtful presentation during internal meetings
  • Manages resource distribution between cross-functional units to support successful study execution
  • Identifies and implements appropriate models to support product development, clinical development, and regulatory filings
  • Participates in the preparation of preclinical documents for submission to regulatory agencies
  • Performs other duties as assigned or special projects as needed



  • A PhD in cellular and/or in vivo pharmacology, oncology, immunology or a related field with 8+ years of relevant post-graduate experience
  • Extensive hands-on experience designing, conducting, and interpreting results from animal models
  • Experience working with adoptive cell therapies and antibody based therapies
  • Experience managing projects and teams and interfacing with FDA, TGA, or EMA
  • Demonstrated excellence in critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently, mentor colleagues, and effectively collaborate with other teams
  • Excellent work planning, organization, record keeping and attention to detail
  • Strong work ethic with a passion for working in a fast-paced, dynamic and diverse work environment


  • Strong in vivo pharmacology background with understanding of T cell and NK cell biology, cytokine function, and overall aspects of how adaptive and innate immune cells interface with other parts of the immune system
  • Experience managing extramural projects and teams highly preferred
