Astellas is announcing a Sr Scientist, In Vitro Pharmacology opportunity at their new affiliate Mitobridge in Cambridge, MA.



Mitobridge is seeking a highly motivated research scientist with a strong background in biochemistry and drug discovery to join our Exploratory Biology group. The primary focus of this role is to provide leadership of early stage projects from exploratory through lead identification and optimization, to identify novel therapeutic targets and enable appropriate biochemical, cellular or biophysical screens, and to conduct high quality bench research to contribute to our drug discovery efforts.


Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide scientific input into the target pipeline, including identification of therapeutic targets and appropriate clinical indications.
  • Use expertise in biochemistry, cell biology and / or biophysics to enable approach to drug screening against novel targets
  • Provide project leadership and scientific expertise within the exploratory project group.
  • Work with and supervise external (CRO) resources to advance early stage projects.
  • Supervise as required bench work of junior scientists.
  • Accurately and clearly communicate data and concepts to colleagues and externally.
  • Present work at regular department meetings.


Quantitative Dimensions:

This position directly impacts our ability to prosecute our company goals of maintaining an early stage pipeline of potential drug candidates. The measures of success are the advancement of early stage projects through the successive stages of the drug discovery pipeline. Their components are

  • Maintaining an awareness of current literature on scientific aspects of relevant target biology, including technological advances, basic science and clinical aspects.
  • Active input to ongoing discussions within Mitobridge aimed at refining choice of novel therapeutic targets.
  • Design, supervision and execution of work flow of biochemistry, cell biology, and / or biophysical experiments designed to advance early stage projects
  • Directing and supervising work of external CROs
  • Planning optimal experimental designs to answer specific questions using the most appropriate available technology
  • Efficient and technically competent execution and interpretation of lab work
  • Maintenance of accurate and up to date records of experimental data
  • Presentation of data in context at regular internal meetings



  • PhD degree in biochemistry, biophysics or related area with 3-6 years postdoctoral experience and at least 2 years of drug discovery experience
  • Demonstrated project leadership skills
  • Previous experience in working with external CROs
  • Prior experience with biochemical, biophysical or cell-based assay development to support compound identification and optimization
  • Prior experience with quantitative enzyme assays including classical determination of KD, Km and kinetic properties
  • Expertise in calcium signaling and calcium assay methodologies.
  • Ability to work productively and communicate effectively in a collaborative and cross-functional team environment
  • Team player with strong written and oral communication skills



  • Prior experience of biophysical techniques such as HPLC, mass spectroscopy, surface plasmon resonance, NMR, etc.
  • Experience of supervising / mentoring junior scientists.
